Tired, Frustrated and Down

TIRED...

After the conference last weekend, I was tired. Too lazy to sit down and do a summary of what I have learned at the conference to share with all of you. Will do it real soon, maybe tomorrow.

Frustrated and Down...

Reese has a throat infection since Monday. He had fever and the highest recorded was 39.3C. It's scary but thank God he is still his usual self and willing to take his medication (a little protest) until this morning 2.30am. He had to take antibiotic for the infection and paracetamol for the fever.

For the past 2 nights, he will get up at around 2am and just talk to himself and roll around the bed, though he didn't really disturb us but still we can't sleep properly, we had to give him fever medication because his fever shot up to 39.3C and he struggled like mad, vomitted and after all the clean up... went back to sleep around 4am... last night..same thing again...but this time..he totally refused the medication and spitted all out...we gave up and we finally got to sleep around 5am.

This morning, he again refused his antibiotics...hai...don't know what to do.... I am so frustrated and about to cry...he has to take the antibiotics for at least 5 days. Today is only the 3rd day. Luckily his fever subsided this morning and so far... no fever... phew...

How to give him his antibiotics? 2 times a day and 5 ml each time.... I am tired, sleepy and frustrated...poor hubby also the same. As I write this post...I am wondering whether my Mum managed to give him the medication. I have never heard Reese shout and scream until this morning when I tried to give him his antibiotics before I left my mother's house. It's really scary. This is the first time Reese shouted and screamed and boy...it was really angry sort of scream.

Any good ideas as to how to get him to take the medication and not SPIT it all out? mixing in food is not an option... someone suggested pinching his nose while giving him the medication...anyone? help...

how about bribing him with a sweet? My girl hates antibotics too and I had to bribe her with that..once she opened her mouth, I quickly let her take it all at one go, followed by the sweet at last.

yeah..same thoughts as Ling. I tangle a sweet or biscuit in front of my boy when he refused to take his medicine.

When he was younger, we grab him like american football and another stuff the medicine in his mouth and close it shut..hold it there till he swallow..very pityfull but no choice.

I guess after going thru this with Ryan just a few a weeks ago, I suppose the advice i can give u is... "F-O-R-C-E!"...sori...i guess that is not the advice u wanna here. I know forcing would only create more fear for medicine in the child.I basically tried everything under the sun but nothing worked except holding him down low on your chest and shoot the ubat at the inside of the cheek. If u shoot it to the back of the throat, high chance he will vomit it out.

Reese is a bright boy.The antibiotics is probably too bitter for him to tolerate.Another idea..u could try mixing with some scotts emulsion?

Ling,

Sweet? He never had a sweet in his life...we tried bribing him with his fav drink YAkult...no use.. he even refuse Yakult because the the smell is kinda similar to his antibiotic.

Blessed mum,
Three of us were there to hold him, feed him the med and all... but just not quick enough to shut his mouth before the medication comes out...

Leona,
You are right... we are using force..just that.. it's so hardlah...

Mummies,

I am now boiling the chinese medicine (lingyung)... my mom said it's tasteless..so going to use that to make his milk tonight. Hopefully it works. He still has a bit of fever..very mild..so just need to get rid of it. As for the antibiotic.. throwing it into the bin... and I forgot to mention that Reese has a bit of diahroe too.. hai.. it's worrying.

I know some mummies do not agree with my method, but most times, i serve Dot's medicine straight from the fridge, and before his milk drink.

So, it's chilled (taste better, i guess) and he's hungry...so he would have to stomach them down, no protest or resistance...

And most times, i would have to wake up him up in the middle of a deep sleep just to feed him his medicine, so this help, because he be too blur to figure out what's that in the syringe or spoon..

one suggestion though, try drinking the medicine (yours will be a fake one) with him...this might help.

and you must exaggerate to a point that yours taste better than sweet honey!!

Hi. Glad to hear Reese is better.

Hope you and Reese's Daddy got some rest to recover from all your lack of sleep.

I used to have to force my boys too, pin them down, use the syringe and pinch the nose. But then we negotiated later that we will not force them if they take it willingly. Since then we now can use a spoon and we don't fight at all.

Oh, sorry to hear you have been having such a tiring time. Glad that he has passed the worse and maybe you and hubby can have more sleep now.

Poor Reese, poor mummy and daddy!
